Happy New Year!
December has come and gone in a flash. We went right to work, getting our heifer bulls turned out. January has been just as busy. We have been gathering, branding, and turning bulls out.
Our Bulls here at the Ranch are all Registered Pure-bred Angus or Charolais. They only spend a short 90 Days in the fields with their girls. This helps maintain uniformity in calf crop, as well as keeping our bulls and cows healthy. For the rest of the 9 months the men of the herd get to take it easy. Angus breed are known for their exceptional meat quality, adaptability, and efficient feed conversion. We run Cross bred cows with pure-bred bulls and get optimal Beef for our customers.
It’s Branding Time! Calves are born and need to be branded, ear marked, castrated, and general health check. Years prior we had enough calves and work that our neighbors and family would come and help lend a hand. We have downsized quit a bit and just need a small crew. Tom and I the 5 kids and a couple of grandpas, our good friend and his little bitties.
We as a family at Hornitos Beef have come to the season in our business where we do all the work with mostly our family and Grandpas. The kids have grown handy over the years. Kids switch off roping and giving shots, mom and dad are the ground crew. There are a couple of different ways ranchers work their calves. Some ranchers will use a calf table, some heal and drag ( ride into the calf herd and rope 2 feet and drag off to the fire. Heading and healing would be another way to get the work done. We healed and drug each calf to the fire. We had beautiful weather this year and calves were strong and healthy.
