What’s New at the Ranch?
We are very thankful for the moisture that came this month, it was perfect timing. Soon the cows will be able to get full bites of fresh sweet green grass.
This month Tom and the kids and I stayed busy. We preconditioned heifers and turned Bulls out, this is the process of sorting and Vet checking for health quality as well as soundness. We select Bulls specifically for Heifers, these boys are selected based off the EPD’s (Expected Progeny Differences) Expected progeny differences (EPDs) have been available for more than 30 years, and the application of EPD technology for the genetic improvement of commercial beef cattle can be a key component of meeting current and future beef production demands.
This application requires that beef producers establish clear goals for their operation. The bulls selected are expected to sire low birth weight calves also known as calving ease this gives the virgin heifers the best chance for an easy delivery. We also turn the Heifer bulls out almost 3 weeks prior to our all-ready established herd. Many ranchers do this to help ease the workload somewhat, during calving season (which will be next fall for us).
We are So thankful for each of our customers and continue to be blessed by each family that we meet.
We are still scheduling harvest dates as well as taking Beef Orders for 1/2 and 1/4 options.
Please check out our website for pricing and availability or feel free to give us a ring and we would be happy to answer any questions. Here at Hornitos Beef we have found it is important now, more than ever to enjoy the little things in life. Stay safe and healthy!
Thank you and Best Wishes,
Tom & Megan Erickson
